Recovery for Combat Athletes: Sleep, Food and Rest Days That Actually Work
Training hard is only half the equation. How DKM fighters recover so they can come back stronger every week.
Every fighter I know has made the same mistake at least once: training six days a week, sleeping five hours a night, and wondering why their hands feel slow. Your body does not get stronger in the gym. It gets stronger after, when you let it rebuild.
/Sleep is the strongest supplement you will ever take
Seven to nine hours. Not negotiable during fight camp, and it should not be negotiable for you either. Reaction time, mood, appetite control and injury risk all get worse with poor sleep. Put the phone away thirty minutes before bed and keep the room dark and cool.
/Eat like you train
Protein at every meal, roughly a palm-sized portion. Carbohydrates around training so you have fuel for rounds. Vegetables because your joints need them. Nothing fancy, just consistent.
/Hydration starts the day before
A hard fitness boxing session can cost you a litre of sweat or more. Drinking only during class is too late. Sip water through the day and add electrolytes on heavy training days.
/Active recovery beats the couch
On off days, walk, stretch, or do light mobility work. Blood flow speeds up repair. Our TRX room is perfect for gentle mobility sessions between harder classes.
/Know when to rest
Sharp pain, a pounding resting heart rate, or dreading training for days in a row are signals, not weaknesses. Tell your coach. A smart day off keeps you training for years instead of weeks.
